Cavetown is the recording project of English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Robin Daniel Skinner, born December 15, 1998, in Oxford and raised in Cambridge. He grew up in a musical household, his father a musicologist and his mother a Baroque flautist, and took up acoustic guitar at eight; his own records are built from vocals, guitar, ukulele, keyboards and melodica. He started a YouTube channel in November 2012 and uploaded his first original song in October 2013, self-producing from his mid-teens, and the channel became the engine of his audience, passing two million subscribers. The early albums were self-released: Cavetown in 2015, 16/04/16 in 2016, and Lemon Boy in 2018, the record that carried him out of the YouTube cover-song orbit and into touring. Sire Records signed him for Sleepyhead in 2020 and Worm Food in 2022, the latter again produced entirely by Skinner at his home studio but written with the live band in mind, giving it a fuller, more rock-leaning arrangement than the bedroom-pop recordings that preceded it. Running with Scissors followed in 2026, his first for Futures Music Group. Skinner also works behind the desk for peers in the same scene, producing for Tessa Violet and mxmtoon, and has recorded with Chloe Moriondo, including a joint version of "Teenage Dirtbag", and with Frankie Cosmos. He toured North America as a headliner in 2022 with Tessa Violet and Addison Grace in support, playing theatres such as the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, the Tabernacle in Atlanta and the Wiltern in Los Angeles. Skinner is transgender, aromantic and asexual, uses he and they pronouns, and is based in New York City.
