Brown Horse

Brown Horse is a six-piece alt-country and indie rock band formed in the early 2020s in Norwich, in the English county of Norfolk, its members all living within walking distance of one another. The line-up is Patrick Turner, Rowan Braham, Emma Tovell, Nyle Holihan, Ben Auld and Phoebe Troup; Tovell plays pedal steel, lap steel and banjo, and the rest rotate lead vocals, guitars, bass and keys across a set. Their debut album Reservoir was cut in four days at Sickroom Studios in Norfolk in spring 2023 with producer Owen Turner, mastered by Scoops Dardaris, and released by Loose Music on 19 January 2024. A second album, All the Right Weaknesses, followed on 4 April 2025, again made with Turner at Sickroom and tracked largely live across a week immediately after a two-month European tour; Mojo gave it four stars, Uncut four and a half, and PopMatters nine out of ten. A third record, Total Dive, arrived on Loose on 10 April 2026. The reference points cited by the band and its label run from Lucinda Williams and Jason Molina to the Breeders, Silver Jews, Uncle Tupelo, Cat Power and Built to Spill, and the results combine close harmony, layered electric guitars and pedal steel with lyrics rooted in East Anglian landscape and small-town interiors — folk-boned material played with the volume and looseness of alt rock rather than the restraint the instrumentation might suggest. The band has toured Europe and North America steadily since Reservoir, and its live sets favour the full-band intensity of the second and third albums.
