Brother and the Hayes

americana · folk rock · blues

Brother and the Hayes is an Americana duo of siblings David Bingaman and Jennie Hayes Kurtz, formed in 2017 and based in Tennessee. The two were raised in Dallas, Texas, sharing a single Epiphone dreadnought guitar and absorbing an unusually wide range of music at home, from jazz, western swing and 1940s pop to 1970s rock, 1990s country and blues; George Strait and Stevie Ray Vaughan are among the names they cite. They began writing together in college in Fayetteville, Arkansas, then moved to Nashville. Jennie developed songwriting programs at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and hosts songwriter showcases in the city; David spent three years working at the Bluebird Cafe, watching established Nashville writers at close range, and now lives in Chattanooga. Their catalog opens with The Dead End EP in 2017, followed by the full-length Tennessee Nights in 2019, Another Strange Time in 2022 and the ten-track In Good Company in February 2025. Between those records they issued a run of singles including Another Margarita and Carolyn in 2023, Ouachita Wind and Hill Country Wine in 2024, and Oh Glory in 2025. The music sits between traditional country, blues and bluegrass, with sibling harmony as its central feature and a writing voice that leans on humor and plain-spoken narrative. Live, the pair work either as a stripped-down acoustic duo or with a full electric band drawn from Nashville session players, and their shows are built around storytelling between songs as much as the songs themselves. They tour listening rooms and small halls across the country, including Daniels Hall at Swallow Hill Music in Denver and Songbirds in Chattanooga.
