Bluegrass Breakdown is a Berlin, Germany bluegrass band formed in 1982 from the merger of two local groups, Greyhound and Mountain Dew, which makes it one of Germany's longest-running active bluegrass acts. It works in the classic five-piece configuration of banjo, bass, guitar, fiddle and mandolin, with most of the members credited on vocals rather than the singing being fixed to one voice. Founding bassist Reinhard Arndt still anchors the group, and the lineup around him includes Carola Adam on guitar and vocals, a member since 2006, Daniel Friedrichs on fiddle and vocals, and Wolfgang Brenner on mandolin and vocals, who joined in the spring of 2015. The repertoire mixes traditional bluegrass with the band's own originals and newgrass-leaning arrangements. Bluegrass Breakdown won the GACMF Bluegrass Awards twice, in 1996 and 1997, during a period when the German bluegrass scene was consolidating around a small number of festival-circuit bands. The group has issued a long run of albums, among them Bluegrass aus Berlin, Pickin' to Beat the Devil, Waitin' for a Southern Train, Light Up the Night, When the Morning Comes, Follow the Stars, and Something Borrowed, Something Blue. It remains a working live act in and around Berlin, playing community halls, folk clubs and pubs such as Alte Dorfschule Rudow and the Celtic Cottage.
