The Black Crowes are an American rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1984 and led by brothers Chris Robinson on vocals and harmonica and Rich Robinson on guitar, the only two constants across a lineup that has otherwise turned over repeatedly. The group began as Mr. Crowe's Garden, a name taken from a children's book, and adopted its present name in 1989 after George Drakoulias signed it to Def American. Its 1990 debut, Shake Your Money Maker, sold more than five million copies, and the follow-up, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, entered the Billboard 200 at number one in 1992. Later studio albums include Amorica (1994), Three Snakes and One Charm (1996), By Your Side (1999), Lions (2001), Warpaint (2008) and Before the Frost...Until the Freeze (2009). The band's sound draws on blues rock, hard rock and southern rock, and its live show leans on long arrangements and a deep bench of covers; it has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. The Crowes went on hiatus from 2002 to 2005, paused again from 2010 to 2013, and split in 2015 amid disputes between the brothers before announcing a reunion in 2019. Happiness Bastards, released in March 2024 on the band's own Silver Arrow label, was its first album of new material in fifteen years; produced by Jay Joyce, it features a duet with Lainey Wilson on Wilted Rose and earned a Grammy nomination for best rock album. A tenth studio album, A Pound of Feathers, again produced by Joyce, followed in March 2026. The band has been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and its 2026 touring includes stadium and amphitheater dates across the United States and Canada.
