Anthony Gomes

Anthony Gomes is a blues-rock guitarist and singer from Toronto, Ontario. He began playing guitar at fourteen, drawn to Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck and Eddie Van Halen, and studied history at the University of Toronto, where he won the C.P. Stacey Award for the highest grade point average by a history major and wrote a master's thesis on the racial and cultural evolution of blues music. That research became the book The Black and White of Blues, nominated for best book of 2014 by Blues411. His professional break came when B.B. King's bus driver heard him play at a jam night and introduced him to King, who invited him to open tour dates in 2005; he has since shared stages with Buddy Guy, Joe Bonamassa, Robert Plant, Heart, Sammy Hagar and Kenny Wayne Shepherd and performed in seventeen countries. High Voltage Blues (2022) debuted at number one on the Billboard blues chart and stayed in its top ten for fifty-eight weeks, appearing on both the 2023 and 2024 year-end blues charts. Praise the Loud followed in 2025, his ninth consecutive album to reach the Billboard blues top ten; it topped the iTunes and Amazon new-release blues charts and entered the UK top forty. Total Guitar named him among the hundred greatest blues guitarists of all time in 2024, and Guitar World readers placed him among the thirty best blues guitarists working today in 2019. In 2010 he founded Music Is The Medicine, a nonprofit that funds scholarships, music education and instrument donations for children with cancer, young adults with autism and veterans with PTSD, and which has drawn grants from State Farm and CVS.
