Anees

hip hop · pop rock

Anees is the stage name of Anees Mokhiber, a Palestinian-American singer, rapper and songwriter born July 30, 1992 and raised in the Washington, D.C. suburbs of Northern Virginia, where he still lives. He studied philosophy and sociology at George Mason University and went on to earn a law degree from the university's Antonin Scalia Law School in 2017, after which he turned to music rather than practice; he has said the legal training let him run his career independently and negotiate his own deals. His music mixes pop, R&B, hip hop and soul, and he cites Eminem, J. Cole, Kanye West and the Lebanese-American poet Kahlil Gibran alongside Arab-American artists such as Omar Offendum and Narcy. He released the single Neverland Fly, about mental health, in April 2020, and Slip, written for his wife, in 2021; his following grew sharply that April when Justin Bieber joined one of his Instagram Live performances unannounced. The 2022 single Sun and Moon reached No. 1 on the Billboard Philippines Songs chart, making him the first international artist and the first English-language song to top it, and also charted in New Zealand; a remix with the Filipino rapper JRoa followed. Leave Me, from the same period, also charted in New Zealand. He released the album Summer Camp as an independent artist in 2024 and toured the United States behind it, with appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and at festivals including SunFest and Lovin' Life. In October 2023 he signed the Artists4Ceasefire letter to the U.S. president regarding the bombardment of Gaza. His live sets are built around voice and acoustic guitar with a full band, and he plays rooms such as Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver and The Bluestone in Columbus.
