AmoChip Dabney

AmoChip Dabney is a Tucson, Arizona multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and engineer. He plays basses, keyboards, guitar, European and Native American flutes, saxophones and percussion, and sings; concert reviews have described him playing as many as three saxophones at once. Over more than thirty years of performing and recording he has worked with Sun Ra and his Omniverse Arkestra, the Afrobeat bandleader O.J. Ekemode and the Nigerian All-Stars, the zydeco accordionist Queen Ida, the New Orleans percussionist and singer Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers Band, the Mardi Gras Indian Monk Boudreaux, Stephen Stills and the Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai, and he has appeared on more than fifty albums. At his Completely Bare Studio in Tucson he composed, performed, produced, recorded and mixed People of Peace as a member of the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet; the record was nominated for Best New Age, Ambient or Chant Album at the 48th Grammy Awards in 2006 and won Best World Music Album at the 2006 Native American Music Awards. He was nominated in the same Grammy category at the 49th ceremony in 2007 for Beyond Words, a project with Gentle Thunder and William Clipman that he composed for, performed on, co-produced and engineered. His other work with Nakai includes the duet recording Edge of the Century. He is also an inductee of Tucson's music hall of fame and a multiple winner of the Tucson-area Tammie Awards. Not Out of Words, an improvisational suite for solo piano, was issued on his own MicroChip label, and he has worked on a solo one-man touring show. He currently leads his dance band, The AmoSphere.
