Acid Mothers Temple

psychedelic rock · noise rock · space rock

Acid Mothers Temple is a Japanese psychedelic and space rock collective founded in 1995 by guitarist Kawabata Makoto, whose original lineup also included Koizumi Hajime, Suhara Keizo and Cotton Casino. Kawabata conceived the project as what he called extreme trip music, built through recording, editing and dubbing, and drawing on progressive rock, krautrock and the work of Karlheinz Stockhausen. The group operates as a soul collective with a rotating cast of players, and records and tours under a series of named configurations that it treats as equally legitimate expressions of the same entity: Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O., Acid Mothers Temple & the Cosmic Inferno, formed in 2005, Acid Mothers Gong, made with members of the British band Gong, Acid Mothers Guru Guru and others. It founded its own AMT label in 1998, has issued a very large catalogue on that imprint and on labels abroad, began touring overseas the same year, and now runs annual North American spring tours and periodic European dates in autumn. Since 2002 it has also hosted the Acid Mothers Festival in Japan, which draws experimental musicians internationally. The current Melting Paraiso U.F.O. lineup is Kawabata on guitar and electronics, Higashi Hiroshi on synthesizer, Jyonson Tsu on voice, guitar and bouzouki, Satoshima Nani on drums and Sawano Shozo on bass, with Cotton Casino returning on voice and synthesizer for selected 2026 dates. The band toured Europe in spring 2026 and follows with a 31-date American run in October billed as the Survive to Metaverse Tour. Recent releases include Reverse of Rebirth Reprise with Geoff Leigh and a further version of Pink Lady Lemonade, a piece the group has recorded and reworked repeatedly. Live sets are long, loud and largely improvised, running modal riffs and drones through distortion and synthesizer noise.
