49 Winchester

49 Winchester is a country and Americana band from Castlewood, Virginia, in the far southwest corner of the state north of Bristol. It formed in 2013 out of front-porch playing among high-school friends Isaac Gibson, Chase Chafin and Bus Shelton, and takes its name from a street in their hometown. The current lineup is Gibson on vocals and guitar, Shelton on lead guitar, Chafin on bass, Noah Patrick on pedal steel, Tim Hall on piano and organ, and Justin Louthian on drums. The band self-released three albums before signing to New West Records: the self-titled 49 Winchester in 2014, The Wind in 2018 and III in 2020. Fortune Favors the Bold, its New West debut, arrived in May 2022 and landed on several year-end best-of lists, and Leavin' This Holler followed in August 2024. Its sixth album, Change of Plans, came out on May 15, 2026, produced by Dave Cobb at Thunderbolt Sound Studios in Savannah, Georgia and released by MCA's Lucille Records imprint in partnership with New West; the singles Changes, Pardon Me, Slowly and Oh Savannah preceded it. The band's song Miles To Go was used in the television series Yellowstone. It has supported Turnpike Troubadours, Whiskey Myers, Corb Lund, Tyler Childers and Luke Combs, was nominated for Duo/Group of the Year at the 2023 Americana Music Honors & Awards and for Group of the Year at the 2026 Academy of Country Music Awards. The sound joins Appalachian storytelling to country, Southern rock and soul, and critics have drawn comparisons to Chris Stapleton and the Drive-By Truckers.
